LONG LACEWOOD CHISEL HANDLE

A while back there was some discussion on the oldtools list about making longer handles for long chisels.

I have an 11” long ˝” Witherby chisel and today I decided to make a long handle for it. I also decided to make it out of silk oak, which is also called “lacewood.”

I would never have done this if I had to buy the wood, but I was just given a pretty good stash of it, so I can afford to play with it.

The wood turns like butter and sands beautifully. As always, my handles have no film finish, just wax. I usually add a brass “Schlagring” as I have done on this handle.

The first picture is a full length shot of the whole thing.

And now a close up of just the handle.

I really like the look of this wood so I will be making more handles out of it in the future. I will learn soon whether this wood is a good choice for this purpose. I don’t know yet.
