Making Screws for Stanley Handles Galoots, I've made screws for Stanley handles on several occasions and thought I'd share another source for dies. A 1/4 20 split die will do the job. The one that I use was made by Little Giant, although they can be readily found from a number of manufacturers including Ward, and Greenlee. Sets can be found on the bay, or if you feel particularly wealthy, are sold by such folks as McMaster Carr or MSC. I see them quite often at local auctions. Each die half has a small screw which bears on it, and is used to move that half in or out from the center. One can cut tight or lose threads by adjusting these screws. This picture shows the die in its holder.
Also shown is a variant that can be used with a brace. The screw is one that I made last night from a 1/4 20 screw. I did turn it down to a 12 diameter before cutting the threads. The second picture shows the screw in the handle hole of a particularly gnarly #6.
